Popular among players all over the world, poker is a game with perhaps the largest number of different variations. Knowing the similarities and differences can help you choose the one you feel the best at and the one giving you the most thrill.
General pattern of play and hierarchy of hands is usually the same in all variants of poker. What changes is most often the method the cards are dealt and betting patterns. Usually players can choose among four main types of poker.
“Straight” poker is the original and most simple variant. In this type of poker each of the players receives a complete hand with cards face-down. After the cards are dealt, the players place bets in one round and then reveal their cards to find a winner of the pot.
In the second most common variant, draw poker, after the cards are dealt and bets are placed, each of the players can exchange their cards in hope of getting a better hand. To do that they discard chosen cards and receive the same amount of new cards from the dealer.
In stud poker players receive some of their cards face-up and some face-down. Then, comparing their own cards with the uncovered cards of opponents they place their bets. In some stud poker games face-down cards are uncovered one by one, with rounds of betting after revealing each of them, making the game even more exciting.
The last variant of poker became popular with the worldwide success of Texas Hold’em Poker. In this game the players receive only a part of their hands and the missing cards are dealt as “community cards”, that each of the players can use to complete their hands. Also in this type of poker bets are often placed before uncovering each of community cards.
From one to multiple betting rounds, with different number of cards, with such variety of poker variants there is no doubt everyone can find something for themselves.
